Comet ISON Growing Brighter; End of the World 2013? Social Media Networks to See Fresh Round of Doomsday Talks [VIDEOS] - International Business Times
Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) appears ready for a big cosmic show by Q4 2013. Gemini Observatory has photographed Comet ISON looking stronger and brighter, as if teasing Earth dwellers as it approaches the Sun. Meanwhile, expect social media networks to be flooded by another round of doomsday talks as ISON makes its historic solar encounter.

How long has Comet ISON been observed?
ISON was discovered in September 2012 by two Russian amateur astronomers. It is believed this comet is making its first passage into the inner solar system. It may have come from the space region called Oort Cloud, where there is abundance in stuff that makes a comet. Records show comets making a first sun encounter could either show strong activity or lose tail brightness.
Forty years ago, a comet called Kohoutek was also hyped up to bring a stellar show later in the year. But in December 1973, many spectators were disappointed as Kohoutek looked merely like a typical bright dot in the sky.
Will Comet ISON 2013 give a spectacular show in the sky?
ISON, which is expected to come to its closest approach to the Sun in November or December 2013, could amaze or disappoint observers, too. Scientists couldn't estimate how bright it would be until a couple more months. But it is a very promising celestial piece.
Comet ISON "could still become spectacularly bright as it gets very close to the Sun," said astronomer Karen Meech, of the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy. She pointed out, however, "I'd be remiss if I didn't add that it's still too early to predict what's going to happen with ISON since comets are notoriously unpredictable."
Why is Comet ISON linked to doomsday, End of the World 2013 prophecy talks?
Nostradamus reportedly made a prediction that "the pope to replace Benedict XVI will 'flee Rome' in the month of December, at a time when the sky has two suns." This is connected to earlier rumour-based speculations that Pope Francis, the 266th and current pope of the Catholic Church, will be the last pope to be named.
As it is not clear whether ISON would be bright enough in December, a 'sky with two suns' remains part of popular myth - a topic popular across social media channels.

About 200 Okmulgee County Residents Displaced By Floods

TULSA, Oklahoma -
The Red Cross is setting up a shelter in Henryetta for residents displaced by flood waters. They estimate that 200 people have left their homes because of the flooding in Henryetta and nearby Dewar.
The shelter has been moved to Dewar, according to Tulsa Region Red Cross representative Donita Quesnel.
It is now at the Dewar Baptist Church, 507 6th Street.
Heavy rainfall is also causing some road closures in eastern and northeastern Oklahoma. Along Interstate 40, from Oklahoma City to Henryetta, between 5 to 8 inches of rain fell. Heavy flooding in Henryetta has been reported.
Flash flood warnings have been extended until 8 p.m. Saturday for the following counties:
- Okfuskee
- Okmulgee
- Muskogee
- Pittsburg
- Le Flore
- Latimer
- Haskell
- McIntosh
The Okmulgee County Sheriff's Office reported earlier in the day that residents in Dewar and Henryetta have been forced from their homes by the flash flooding.
Temporary shelters were set up for Dewar residents at the City Hall: 105 North Broadway Street. Henryetta residents were also being housed at the First Methodist Church, 1212 Lake Road.
Flooding of low lying areas will likely continue. No injuries have been reported at this time.
Road closures, according to ODOT:
- Okmulgee County: Highway 75 is closed at 4th Street.
- Okfuskee County: Highway 48 is closed one mile south of Interstate 40 near Okemah.
- Nowata County: Highway 10 east of Lenapah remains closed.
Some other areas that may experience flash flooding include Okmulgee, Council Hill, Morris, Okfuskee, Okmulgee State Park and Welty.
Remember, flooding conditions can be deadly. Most flood-related deaths take place in automobiles.
Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the road. It only takes two feet of rushing water to carry away most SUVS and pickups. Turn around - don't drown.
Central Europe inundated
BERLIN (AP) - Authorities in parts of central Europe issued disaster warnings and scrambled to reinforce flood defenses Sunday as rivers swelled by days of heavy rain threatened to burst their banks.
Several people have died or are missing in the floods in Gerermany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland since Thursday.

In the nearby city of Trebenice a woman was found dead in the rubble after a summer cottage collapsed due to the raging water, Czech public television reported.
Czech Prime Minister Petr Necas said 200 soldiers have been deployed so far to help local authorities.
In Germany, where at least four people have died or are missing, Chancellor Angela Merkel promised federal support for affected areas and said the army would be deployed if necessary.
Several cities including Chemnitz in the east, and Passau and Rosenheim in the south, issued disaster warnings.
Passau, which is located at the confluence of three rivers, could see waters rise above record levels of 2002, said Mayor Juergen Dupper.
German news agency dpa reported that large stretches of the Rhine, Main and Neckar rivers have been closed to ship traffic.
Evacuations are also taking place in neighboring Austria and Switzerland.
Meteorologists are predicting the rainfall will ease in the coming days.

Apocalypse now (and June, July, August ...) - Movies Wires - MiamiHerald.com
BY SHARON HOFFMANN
THE KANSAS CITY STAR
The Mayans were apparently wrong about a 2012 doomsday. So Hollywood is busy trying to end the world in 2013, over and over and over again.
We've already faced Tom Cruise's sci-fi "Oblivion" and alien and zombie incursions in "The Host" and "Warm Bodies." And now, Will Smith's "After Earth." Soon: more aliens, more zombies, more end-times.
Meanwhile, TV is filled with apocalyptic mayhem - "The Walking Dead," "Revolution" and, returning for its third season June 9, Steven Spielberg's "Falling Skies."
What's going on here? Is popular entertainment toying with our post-9/11 insecurity? Our pessimism in a down economy and the relentless 24/7 news cycle? Or is this trend just more evidence that directors love to blow things up?
Whatever the reason, our planet is in for a rough patch on screen.
In movies, of course, Earth has been a long-suffering victim. After the Cold War wave of alien invasions, global destruction came back with a vengeance in the 1990s with "Independence Day" (Will Smith again), "Armageddon" and other blockbusters. Since then, every year brings more doomsdays, in the form of natural disasters ("2012," "The Day After Tomorrow"), aliens (the "Transformers" series, "Battleship"), zombies ("I Am Legend"), etc.
But this year, Hollywood's global annihilation has picked up the pace. And here's a Revelation: The End can be funny as well as fearsome. Three doomsday comedies will attack funny bones this summer:
-"This Is the End" (June 12): Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and other comedy stars, playing their raunchy selves, are partying at James Franco's house, until apocalyptic cataclysms interrupt.
-"The World's End" (Aug. 23): Childhood friends become our only hope for survival after a trip to the pub. Silliness from the "Shaun of the Dead" team: director Edgar Wright and stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.
-"Rapture-Palooza" (sometime this summer): After Armageddon, the atheists are stuck on Earth with zombies, demons and Craig Robinson as the Antichrist.
Still, what keeps the world ending again and again is the thrills. After "After Earth" comes:
-"World War Z" (June 21): Brad Pitt races against time to save the world from rampant zombies.
-"Pacific Rim" (July 12): Guillermo del Toro's epic battle between giant human-piloted robots and giant alien monsters.
-"Elysium" (Aug. 9): In 2159, Matt Damon lives on a withering Earth, but Jodie Foster and the other rich elite get to kick back on a posh orbiting space station.
-"Ender's Game" (Nov. 1): Aliens nearly destroyed us once. Now it's up to young Andrew Wiggin to make sure they'll never try again. With Harrison Ford and Ben Kingsley.
-"Thor: The Dark World" (Nov. 8): What is it with these aliens? Thor is trying to bring order to the universe, but the pesky denizens of Svartalfheim have other ideas.
-"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" (Nov. 22): Jennifer Lawrence and cast mates are back in post-apocalyptic Panem, where the rebellion is simmering.
Plenty more global disasters are on the horizon: Next year brings us another "Robocop," another "Transformers," another "Hunger Games" and, going back to our earliest tale of Earth's destruction, "Noah."
So 2013's end is only the beginning.
